Owens & Minor needed an economic solution to construct a new, 75,000-square-foot warehouse. The new facility had to be located within city limits due to future use, as mandated by the local University Hospital; however, the only available site was previously a landfill that contained non-contaminated material.

BC Construction Group (BCCG) was faced with the challenge of finding a cost-savings solution for its Client. Extracting the material from the site would be too costly. In response to this costly dilemma, BCCG proposed an alternate method to prepare the site for construction – Dynamic Compaction. This process involved repeatedly dropping heavy weights to compact the material. BCCG was meticulous about minimizing all risks by thoroughly surveying neighboring buildings and documenting existing conditions in order to mitigate any future claims that might arise from the seismic activity resulting from the process.

The warehouse was constructed using concrete, tilt-up panels and has 14 dock positions and 1 building ramp. The design includes a 5,000-square-foot office, as well as a 5,000-square-foot temperature-controlled storage room. The facility was built based on an 11-month fast-track schedule, including land acquisitions.

The finished facility earned a LEED Silver Certification, which is awarded by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) when a building is constructed to meet criteria defined by the Leadership in Engineering and Environmental Design (LEED) program.
